Dr. Dale would be pleased to speak to your group about medicine. He will be displaying the most advanced equipment of the 1860’s. Dr. Dale will explain the examining instruments, surgical instruments, splints and medicines. He will also demonstrate the compounding of medicines and “pill rolling”. But, more importantly, he will explain some of the medical “theories” of that time. With humor and an upbeat tempo, Dr. John Dale will help your group to better understand, and make sense out of, the medical practices of the middle to late 1800’s.
Richard Best, a.k.a. Dr. John Dale was not just interested in medicine of the 1860’s, it was an obsession. When he set out to bring Dr. Dale to life, he did everything possible to train to be that physician of the 1860’s. Many physicians of that time became doctors by reading medicine with a practicing physician. In many ways, this is what he did.
Reading physician manuals of that period was a good start, but he also attended two autopsies. He conferred many times with a physician, a gastroenterologist, a gynecologist, several surgeons, a nurse and several pharmacists. He also received a lot of encouragement and help from Mr. Jim Edmonson, the curator of the Dittrick Museum of Medical History.
